Office of Technology Transitions (OTT) at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the EnergyTech University Prize (EnergyTech UP) is a collegiate competition challenging multidisciplinary student teams to develop and present a business plan that leverages DOE national laboratory-developed and other high-potential energy technologies.

Six Offices of DOE Offering $25K Each
Six DOE Technology Offices offer up to $25,000 each in technology bonus prizes for the best teams in their respective fields. The six offices include the Geothermal Technologies Office, Solar Energy Technologies Office, Office of Nuclear Energy, Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, Building Technologies Office, and Water Power Technologies Office.
Entering the Competition
EnergyTech UP will utilize the HeroX website as its competition platform. This platform empowers people to
create, compete in, and share contests that address and solve global problems.

Late January–Early February 2022: Regional Convener Explore Phase Events
o Exact dates and times to be determined – will differ for each region.
o Teams pitch business plans.
o One winner from each regional convener Explore Phase event will be selected; winners will receive
$2,500 and will advance to the national competition.
Late February–Early March 2022: Refine Phase
o Regional winning teams receive mentorship and access to the Energy I-Corps curriculum to improve their
business plans.
Mid-March, 2022: Pitch Phase Submission Due
o Regional winning teams submit their written business plan, slide deck, and a short video presentation.
March 24, 2022: Pitch Phase Event
o Regional winning teams present to a panel of industry judges as part of Carnegie Mellon University’s
Energy Week.
March 24, 2022, 5 p.m. ET: National and Technology Bonus Prize Winners Announced
