California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) has partnered with ESRI, a global leader in geographic information systems (GIS) software, location intelligence, and mapping. This collaboration promises to provide CSUSB students with unparalleled opportunities for career advancement and hands-on training in the burgeoning field of geospatial technology.
Developing the Workforce of the Future
The collaboration between CSUSB’s Department of Geography & Environmental Studies and ESRI is set to redefine the academic-industry relationship. ESRI, headquartered in Redlands, California, is an industry heavyweight and a trailblazer in geospatial technology solutions.
Touring the ESRI Campus
Last spring, around 100 CSUSB students visited the ESRI campus. Led by Yolonda Youngs, an associate professor of geography at CSUSB, and faculty colleagues Bo Xu and Jennifer Alford, students explored the heart of GIS innovation.
The tour provided a unique platform for undergraduate and graduate students from diverse disciplines, including geography, environmental studies, computer science, biology, and engineering, to see geospatial technology in action.
The ESRI campus tour wasn’t just about sightseeing; it was a bridge to career prospects. The students were afforded the privilege of interacting with seasoned GIS professionals and technicians, allowing them to tap into the extensive knowledge and experience that ESRI brings. This exposure is invaluable, as students can network and seek mentorship in the ever-evolving field of geospatial technology.
Beyond the Tour: A Commitment to the Future
The ESRI-CSUSB partnership doesn’t stop at a single tour. It marks the commencement of an ongoing collaboration. As part of a new initiative in the Department of Geography & Environmental Studies, this tour is the first of many activities designed to enhance the students’ understanding of geospatial technology. The future holds a promising array of tours, workshops, and events, all closely associated with ESRI, ensuring that CSUSB students have a continuous and dynamic engagement with the GIS industry.
ESRI’s investments in Academia
ESRI maintains a dedicated University Program that offers institutions of higher learning access to their GIS software, teaching resources, and support. Over 3,000 universities around the world are part of this program. Through it, ESRI aims to empower educators and students by integrating geospatial technology into various academic disciplines.
ESRI operates through the support of education managers who provide training, resources, and guidance to educators, ensuring students gain practical experience in geospatial technology.
The company also frequently sponsors and supports GIS competitions and challenges at universities. These events encourage students to apply GIS skills to solve complex spatial problems.
The partnership between CSUSB and ESRI shows a shared vision to help students with the skills, knowledge, and connections they need to use geospatial technology. The ESRI campus tour, the first of many planned activities, has opened doors to networking and career development for CSUSB students.
